Nova Southeastern University's Department of Endodontics 13th Annual Alumni Conference

Fort Lauderdale, FL •Friday, February 26, 2016, 8:30 a.m. - Saturday, February 27, 2016, 4:30 p.m.

Modern endodontic practice must provide both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options. It has been our observation that there are too many nonsurgical retreatments of cases that should have been treated micro-surgically in the first place. The basics of endodontic microsurgery will be presented so that more endodontists will consider this option when faced with failed cases.

Day 1 - Morning Presentation
Endodontic Microsurgery – Theory and Practice
Modern endodontic practice must provide both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options. It has been our observation that there are too many nonsurgical retreatments of cases that should have been treated micro-surgically in the first place. The basics of endodontic microsurgery will be presented so that more endodontists will consider this option when faced with failed cases.
Modern endodontic microsurgery is fundamentally different from the old apical surgery or apicoectomy in terms of instruments, materials, biological principles, and, most importantly, the success rate. In this presentation, the speaker will illustrate eight basic steps in microsurgery to help ensure that the participants have a clear understanding of the surgical procedures. These eight steps include esthetic flap management, effective hemostasis, a small osteotomy, skillful management of the mental nerve and the sinus, identification of complex root-canal anatomy visible on the resected root surface, precise root-end preparation with ultrasonic tips, and root-end filling with MTA or bioceramic and flap closure with microsutures. In the end, the long-term outcome assessment will be presented.

Day 2 - Morning Presentation
Cone Beam CT scan is a new addition to the technological advances in Endodontics. With the assistance of 3-D imaging, can we now diagnose our patients better? Will CBCT help in the planning and execution of complex endodontic treatment? These are questions that every endodontist likes to ask before investing in such technology. With the help of clinical cases and CBCT scans this presentation focuses on the role of CBCT in the diagnosis and treatment of complex case scenarios in a modern endodontic practice.

Speaker Information
Syngcuk Kim, DDS, PhD, MD(hon)
Dr. Kim is well known and respected for his research in dental pulp physiology and microcirculation, running the Pulp Biology Laboratory when he was a faculty member at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. When he joined the Dental School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 as chairman of the Department of Endodontics, Dr. Kim not only brought the department into the “New Age “ using the Microscope in endodontics, but also established the Microscope Training Center at the School. Since its inception, over 1000 leaders in endodontic education and clinical practitioners from the USA, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia have been trained at the Center. It is the longest running University based continuation program in the world. He also changed old fashioned endodontic surgery to modern microsurgery by developing a series of microinstruments for the field and writing a textbook entitled, “Color Atlas of Microsurgery in Endodontics” published in 2000 by the Saunders Co. Extensive speaking engagements take Dr. Kim to universities, conferences, study clubs, and professional associations in the US and abroad. Dr. Kim has published over seventy articles in peer review journals. He has also served as Guest Editor in the Dental Clinics of North America series, published in July 1997 and 2004 and he is co-author of a text book in endodontics entitled “Endodontology, a Color Atlas of Dental Medicine”, Thieme Co., Germany 2000. This text book has been translated to 14 languages. His current research interest is evaluation of various dental materials using stem-cell lines.

Sashi Nallapati, BDS
Dr. Sashi Nallapati obtained his dental degree from the Govt. Dental College and Hospital, Hyderabad, India and his post graduate training in the specialty of Endodontics from Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Florida, USA. He has a full time private practice limited to endodontics in Kingston, Jamaica Dr. Nallapati serves on the faculty of NSU, College of Dental Medicine, Florida, USA as a visiting adjunct professor and at the School of Oral Health Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Kingston, Jamaica as a part time lecturer. He is the founding member and the past president of the International Academy of Endodontics. He authored several clinical articles that were published in peer-reviewed journals and contributed two chapters to the book, Best Practices in Endodontics, A Desktop Reference. Dr. Nallapati has lectured in 14 countries on various clinical topics in endodontics. In 2014 he received the prestigious distinguished alumni achievement award from Nova Southeastern University.
